Linux is a version of UNIX.
As such it is an operating system (OS).
Linux may be configured as a server or as a work station.
The majority of servers (60%) are running some flavor of Windows NT.
Linux is currently only running only a few (1%) of the active servers.
The rest of the world's servers (39%) are running come commercial flavor of Unix.
Linux will run on Intel based systems.
Even older systems like those based on 80386 and 80486 processors can run Linux.
Linux is almost ready for "prime time."
There has been, and continues to be, a lot of work done.
Lastly, a high speed CD-ROM will help installing a lot.
I just purchased a 34x Mitsumi CD-ROM.
My install time with a kickstart install dropped from 55 minuets to 8 minutes.
You WILL blow up your Linux installation and a fast CD-ROM is wonderful for when you do that.
