A "desk top" is really a method of managing a system.
We all know and love/hate the Win95 desktop.
It is the starting place for doing all of our tasks from word processing to system management.
I have just installed the KDE desktop.
All I can say is WOW !!
If you have fooled around with an older version of Linux you might not like that desk top.
Actually you might HATE it.
I can only tell you to get the new Linux-Mandrake release.
The install runs a bit longer but it is more than worth the wait.
